The technical name for chin implant surgery is a mentoplasty. A chin implant is designed to add more size or move forward a receding chin. In some cases, a chin augmentation is done in conjunction with a rhinoplasty or liposuction.

Who is a candidate for a chin implant?

The best candidate for a chin implant is an individual with a receding chin and a normal dental bite. For those with a bite dysfunction, jaw surgery---in conjunction with mentoplasty---may be necessary.

The Surgery

A mentoplasty can be performed with deep sedation or general anesthesia. A mentoplasty usually takes one to two hours. During the procedure, the space for the implant will be developed and the implant will be inserted. After the procedure, dressings will be applied and you will be placed in post-operative garments.
